Our purpose

A different way of thinking about food security

Community Table Network is a community-led initiative exploring how we can build greater resilience, connection and autonomy around our local food supply.

We believe communities already hold many of the resources they need — land, knowledge, skills, equipment, experience, produce and people willing to contribute.

Our role is to help bring those resources together.

From sharing the surplus of a backyard harvest to exploring collaborative farming, livestock production and shared access to land, Community Table Network exists to research, connect and support practical ways for people to participate more meaningfully in the food that sustains them.

What Community Table Network will do

From backyard abundance to shared production

Community Table Network will work across different scales of local food production.

At a neighbourhood level, this may be as simple as helping someone with an abundance of oranges connect with someone growing avocados, eggs, herbs or another local food.

At a larger scale, it means investigating how people can combine land, skills, labour, equipment, knowledge and other resources to create productive food systems that may not be achievable individually.

Our work will include research, education, community networking and the development or support of practical projects that increase local food production and resilience.

Over time, this could include land-sharing initiatives, collaborative farming and livestock projects, shared infrastructure, education programs and partnerships with organisations already doing valuable work in this space.

Research first

Community Table Network is beginning with research.

Before developing large-scale projects, we want to understand what works: the resources already available within our region, the barriers to participation, successful models operating elsewhere and the opportunities unique to our local community.

How can underutilised land contribute to local food production?

How can people pool resources without everyone needing to own a farm?

What infrastructure, knowledge and partnerships are needed to make community-scale food production viable?

How can these models contribute meaningfully to health, wellbeing and community resilience?

The aim is not simply to generate ideas. It is to identify practical models that can be tested, developed and grown.

The bigger vision

What if we could build something bigger?

Imagine a community in which access to good food is strengthened by the resources already around us.

Where a landholder with unused acreage can connect with people who have farming knowledge and energy. Where equipment can be shared rather than duplicated. Where experienced producers can pass knowledge to another generation. Where families can participate in producing some of the food they eat.

And where larger groups can come together around land, livestock, food production and shared infrastructure to create something none of them could easily create alone.

We don't expect to know exactly what that model looks like yet.

Community Table Network exists to help find out — and to help bring the right people to the table to build it.

How resources are used

Purpose before profit

Community Table Network is being established as a not-for-profit initiative. Its resources exist to create community benefit.

Income generated through products, services, memberships, events, education and fundraising — together with grants, donations, gifts and other contributions — will be directed toward furthering the organisation's purpose.

That may include research, education, community programs, local food-production initiatives, shared infrastructure and resources, pilot projects, partnerships and support for aligned organisations.

As Community Table Network grows, surplus resources will be reinvested into developing practical projects that strengthen food security, community resilience, health and wellbeing.
